Les Liquidateurs : dedicated to the liquidators of Chernobyl and Fukushima
Armenian translation : Alice Godjikian
Obsküre Mag : 4/1/2019 - Max Lachaud
"Un nouvel album de La Société des Timides à la Parade des Oiseaux est toujours une joie : la promesse d’une plongée dans un univers inventif, délirant et poétique."
A new release from La STPO is always a joy : the promise of a dive into an inventive, delusional and poetic universe.
"Comme d’habitude, la production est impeccable, les graphismes inspirés et les textes toujours aussi énigmatiques. Un très bon cru, donc, et un des plus apocalyptiques."
As usual, the production is impeccable, the graphics inspired and the texts always as enigmatic. A very good vintage and one of the most apocalyptic.

A very cohesive set of mature manifestations of the spirit of radical artistic adventure that LA STPO always had as an ideological north within the world of avant-garde rock.

I have listened to the STPO’ new album many, many times and the pleasure it gives me is so great that it pushes me to write these few lines just to say thanks and to invite you to enjoy this very remarkable work.
L’Empreinte contains four long tracks, all of them recorded between 2010 and 2012. Offre Speciale de Lancement de la Chute and 30000 Fois have never been released before while La Vallée des Empreintes appeared only in a live version in the 2013 album La STPO in Concerts and Les Liquidateurs was released as a vinyl album in 2015.
They are wonderful compositions that look like Expressionist paintings, showing the grotesque, absurd, tragic side of human life, combining electric (guitar, bass and synthesizer) and acoustic (drums, percussions, cello and trumpet) sounds in a refined and strong way at the same time.
Likewise, Pascal Godjikian’s versatile beautiful voice’s either high and ethereal or low and throaty as if it came from underground.
I cannot choose one song rather than another, since I love all of them equally. Just a few words about Les Liquidateurs, of which I understand the words best. It’s a concept about the tragedy of Chernobyl in 1986 and it makes us live again the nightmare of the Reactor Four accident: we hear the warning signs, we see the sacrifice of liquidators, the lies and hesitations of Russian authorities and the moving final funeral march (with the ghost of radioactivity still throbbing in the background). Very touching.
Beauty is to be found not only in the music, but also in the STPO sleeves (by, as usual, JimB, the guitar player) that often represent birds. They stand out in the name of the band and seem to be superior impassive creatures observing human events in the inexorable passing of time. Here we have an inventor in his laboratory showing proudly his highest creation: a mechanical bird that man can control. Will it work or will it more likely fail?
Avantgard, Progressive, New Wave are the kinds of music that you usually mention trying to categorize the STPO’ music, but there is no doubt that their style is completely personal and unique.
Wanting anyhow to make a comparison I would move again into another artistic field quoting Ariel’ songs from Shakespeare’s The Tempest: something inexplicable, unexpected, disconcerting….absolutely wonderful. Something for which the one who happens to listen to it asks: “Where should this music be? In the air or the earth?”
